The above photos showing dust blowing across the mine site were taken April 20, 2010, over five years after

the picture below.  Dust mitigation obviously still remains a problem.  (Photos by Peggy Pauly)

Dense dust blows across the mine site on March 19, 2005; air monitors may, or may have not, captured air samples for investigation of contents.  Prevailing winds generally blow from south to north, but were blowing from the westsouthwest to eastnortheast when this picture was taken.  Some areas of the site have been scheduled for over a year for "capping" to prevent airborn contaminants from leaving the site.  (Photo courtesy of Peggy Pauly) For December 2005 wind pictures, click here.

The Yerington Community Action Group was organized by residents with concerns about the impact to our community from the Yerington Mine Site. The agencies involved are evaluating the possible risks to the workers at the mine, but no tests are being done to protect the residents in the community by evaluating the potential risk to us.

Our Action Group is asking the agencies involved to ensure the safety of our community by doing the proper tests and evaluations to prove that we are not being harmed by an invisible threat. We believe the agencies involved over the last 20 years: first, failed to detect the problems; second, failed to warn the workers at the mine and the community of the potential risks; and then thirdly, are failing to remedy the situation. As a community we need to stand together and get the answers and actions to ensure our safety.

We are concerned for the present and former workers of the mine as well.  We hope to have the ATSDR form a "Known Exposure Registry" to track worker's health. We are working to get the Nevada State Health Division to begin an investigation regarding the possible health problems in the community caused by the contaminates from the mine site.

We keep in contact with all of the offices and agencies involved by email, phone calls and letters. We will keep the community updated with any new data by news articles, this website and our bi-monthly meetings.
